The past 3 months have been especially busy for the band and guard. Winter guard competitions started at the end of January and continued through mid march. Despite many hardships and a bit of a rocky start to the season, the winter guard managed to pull off their most successful season since the program was restarted in 2018. The guard made it to semi-finals for the second time since the program returned and it was the first time they got to perform at semi-finals as the first time the guard made it was during the 2020 season which was canceled for Covid-19. The guard finished their season with a score of 64.32 and did not make state finals. District solo and ensemble was held February 4th at the middle school and state solo and ensemble was held February 25th at North Central High School in Indianapolis. Concert band contest was held on April 21 at Snider High School. Both the first and second-hour concert bands scored gold ratings. Students have been impatiently counting down the days till the 2023 marching season begins. Rehearsals start May 9th and are from 6-8:30 on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

With the break into the second semester, the band has been split into first and second-hour band. Both groups have been working with Mr. Meyers on sight reading and on their music for solo and ensemble which is on February 4th, at the middle school. Times will be sent out in the next couple of weeks. The majority of pep band games take place this month as well. Pep band is when the band goes to basketball games and play pop charts in the stands. Winter Guard rehearsals continue into this month as the guard gets ready for their first competition. The guard will be performing at the Snider High School Contest on the 28th. Showtime will be announced at a later date so keep an eye on the calendar as it is updated frequently and is the best source for all schedules and all schedule changes regarding the band and guard programs. The guard has also received a very generous donation from Angola Bargain Bin (Mystery Box Angola). The people who work there have been kind enough to donate a new speaker to the guard for their rehearsals.

On the 9th the Hornets bored busses for the annual Elementary Christmas Tour. The band and the Vocal Infinity choir went to all four elementary schools to spread holiday cheer through music. December 15th was the 2022 Angola Band’s Christmas concert. This year we had an incredible turnout, the turnout was actually so good that students had to borrow chairs from the choir room and set them up as extensions to the rows in the auditorium. Winter Guard rehearsals started this month and have been every Monday, Thursday, and Saturday at Ryan Park. Special thanks to the Ryan Park staff for letting the guard use their gym for rehearsals.

With uniforms hung up and performance silks put away, the hornets start preparing for the Christmas Tour to the elementary schools, the Christmas Concert, pep band games, and Winter Guard. Christmas music has been passed out and this year the band will be playing Sleigh Ride, The Most Wonderful Time Of The Year, and A Cartoon Christmas. On Wednesday and Thursday, Winter Guard clinics were held. These are free opportunities for people interested in being a part of the Winter Guard for the season can try out some dance basics and flag basics. This year the guard has a larger turnout of new students than last season. The informational meeting for parents, as well as the show announcement, had to be postponed and will be rescheduled soon. Stay tuned for updates on the 2023 Angola High School Winter Guard’s season.

On Saturday the Hornets wrapped up their season at ISSMA Class C State Finals at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indy. It was an eventful and mildly stressful morning with a 4 am call time, a bus breaking down, and a harshly set arrival time of 7:30 am due to a road closure. Regardless, the Hornets pushed through to perform a great show at 10:30 am. The 2022 marching season ended with the Hornets taking home 10th place and one of the highest scores of the season.

This week began the start of elimination rounds for the 2022 marching season with regionals. At this point in the season scores and exact placements cannot be disclosed to students, however, due to a top 10 placement at the Carroll Regional, the Hornets will be competing at ISSMA Class C Semi-State on October 29, at Decatur Central. They received a gold rating with distinction in music, visual, and general effect which was something that only 5 bands in class C across the state were capable of doing.

This Saturday marked the start of ISSMA Competitions for the Hornets. ISSMA Competitions include an invitational, regionals, semi-state, and state. What makes ISSMA marching band events different from regular invitationals is that instead of receiving a first, second, or third-place trophy, bands receive a gold, silver, or bronze rating. Instead of caption awards, bands who score above a certain threshold can receive distinctions in music, visual, and general effect. This weekend the Hornets took home a gold rating with distinction in music, visual, and general effect.

On Friday, September 23, the Hornets took the field for Angola High School’s Homecoming Football Game. Two members of the Marching Hornets were on the Homecoming Court. This included one of the Junior members of the Homecoming Court and Angola’s Homecoming Queen who ended up marching halftime barefoot. On Saturday, September 24 the Hornets took 3rd place at the Carroll invitational, with only a point separating first, second, and third place. This week they worked with new bodywork, new music, and new drill which they used to take half of their closer to Carroll. The closer included small features for each brass section and Mr. Meyers allowed the Hornets to fill in the 32-count dance break with their own choreography. Next weekend, the plan is for the Hornets to take the whole closer and to have pre-written choreography for the dance break.

The Hornets took 3rd place at the Concord invitational. After cut rehearsal hours due to a fog delay, not having school on Friday, and getting a ton of new bodywork, the Hornets performed their best against some tough competition. Including Open Class D’s 2021 second place, which was moved up to Open Class C for the 2022 season, and Open Class C’s 2021 second place.
